What about little microphones? What if everyone swallowed them, and they played the sounds of our hearts through little speakers, which could be in the pouches of our overalls? When you skateboarded down the street at night you could hear everyone’s heartbeat, and they could hear yours, sort of like sonar. One weird thing is, I wonder if everyone’s hearts would start to beat at the same time, like...

Apparently, there are people in Seattle who read...
Because within ten minutes of my last post, I had three emails from readers in the Seattle area trying to convince me of how warm and gorgeous the summers are. I know this. And Kevin B. from Fremont is pretty convincing of how much I will enjoy his neighborhood if I do decide to make the move. I know this to be true, as Fremont is where I bought a fabulous and most ridiculous 70’s...

notes on the weather
After living in the farthest corners of the US and being exposed to various extremes of temperature and precipitation, I’ve reached a consensus with my inner dichotomies with regards to my next place of residence. When I left New York, it was under good terms and the move to California felt right. I told the person closest to me at the time, when he asked me how we might know if Los Angeles...

“How do you know when you’re finished making love?”
– Jackson Pollock, in response to the question ‘How do you know when you’re finished with a painting?’ I like the quote even though I think J. Pollock made crap.

How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours. — Wayne Dyer It’s sometime in the evening, just after work. You’re riding the 48L up Geary. At the Union Square stop, you see a girl running for the back door, and you hold it open for her. She jumps on and continues her phone conversation and you both stand there in the back doorway adjacent to one another. You feel your...

slumber of wanting
My sleep was filled with brief dreams strung together as if words forming sentences that culminated in a sweaty sensual paragraph.

sixteen things
From the “sixteen things you may or may not know about me” reblog that keeps going around, and I keep getting tagged, so I’m giving in. Besides, who doesn’t like to talk about themselves? Sixteen things: 1.) I used to live in Houdini’s former apartment in upper west Manhattan, exactly one hundred years after he had moved out. 2.) Gertrude Stein also lived in that...

Last night I dreamt I was on the beach, warm sand under my back, slight breeze on my skin. Coming into focus, alive with color and backlit from the sun, was a large octopus. It drifted slowly toward me at first, then faster, and suddenly I was lifted off into the air. The ground beneath me shrunk away as I climbed higher, one tentacle of the octopus pulling me into the sky. We joined other...

PSA for my friends: I officially made the switch to AT&T, but have kept my old Verizon number. The temporary number AT&T gave me is no longer valid as of this morning. I kept my old number for two reasons; for my past clients who may decide to hire me for subsequent baby catchings, and because I like the melodic intonations of said number. Yes, I’m a geek.

Together and Apart
When I read Richard Yates’ novel depicting a postwar American couple living in the cozy comfort of suburbia while feeling desperately alone in their quest for perfection and normalcy, I was moved so much that I wanted to see it adapted for screen, even if it meant I had to do it. That was in 2003, and sometime since then Justin Haythe took that task upon himself. Directed by Sam Mendes...
